Interior Design Ideas

Getting into home interior design is not necessarily for the faint of heart, as it can get very complicated and expensive. There is much more to home interior design and just slapping paint on the wall or doing some basic repairs. While virtually anyone can do those sort of tasks, designing an interior from scratch is quite another

However, there is something quite wonderful about having everything in your own hands and having complete control over how you design your house. Obviously, all these sort of things start with a plan. To begin with, this plan might just be a rough sketch on a piece of paper and then it evolves from there.

The plan is the most important thing in fact because it gives you an overall impression of what the end result is going to look like. Before you start spending money and time, you need to have a good impression of what you are in for. There are a number of ways to achieve this.

If you have any knowledge of computer aided design, then you can truly work wonders with today's modern and super fast computers. Though these order programs do tend to have a rather steep learning curve, computers these days are ultimately capable of creating photo realistic designs which you can fly through to see everything how it would look in real life.

However, if you are not into computers and you just don't have that knowledge, then you can also do quite a lot just with a pen and paper. Creating some two dimensional plans as to whether furniture will go is a start. You will also need to be good at meditating however, as you are going to need to visualise without a picture how your room is going to look.

Of course, you can browse the Internet to find lots of pictures and see if you can find something that inspires you and while you might be able to compare it to the room that you want to redesign, it is not going to be particularly accurate.

Once you have a good idea of what you want to achieve, you can start getting to work. There are various guides available which can teach you the basics of home interior design but you are going to be required to be practical and a general knowledge of basic maintenance is almost essential.

Many of the aspects of home interior designer quite easy to teach yourself. Pretty much anyone can do the basic jobs of painting in preparing services but he gets a bit more complicated if you want to do any plasterwork or install tiles. Nonetheless, there is no reason why you can't learn and you can also save a lot of money if you do learn. Hiring a professional interior designer is extremely expensive and it could be argued, that they wouldn't do the job exactly how you wanted it anyway.

Also, if you just want a simple redesign, you can experiment a little and the job will also be far simpler. There is nothing complicated about repainting the room and getting somebody had that a new carpet in for example or even doing it yourself.

If you want to redecorate your entire home, then learning interior design and decorating might be the thing to do. So, with that in mind, interior design software could be one of your purchases, especially if you don't want to employ a decorator. There are of course advantages and disadvantages to the whole idea of "Do It Yourself". First, If you're not a computer-friendly person then you might find it a bit difficult to pilot the waters of interior design software. Again, there is always the alternative, to get yourself an interior decorator where you will shell out substantially more than you can afford. Which in turn, means that you might have to cut down on some of your decorating needs. If you are anything like me, you would be saying right now - "I don't think so!"

Now back to the software. If you're not too well-situated with your artistic abilities and visual image skills you might look to some relief of a well know friend to help you understand the software. However, if you are a die hard and want to learn it yourself, by all means, don't hesitate. The learning will pay off for you. It doesn't actually matter either way how you go about it as long as you get you home interior design project off the ground.

After all there's only so long that you can stand and watch your house fall to pieces around you. Ok, Though that might have been a bit of an exaggeration, if you're thinking about home interior design or remodeling then now is the time to do it. If you put it off now, there's no telling when and if there will be a next time.

And one of the very first things you can do for your home interior design project will be to decide precisely what you're going to do. For example, are you going to go through the entire house one room at a time or are you going to do only one or two rooms right now. This is an important decision, so take your time and make sure it is what you want to do. This decision dictates the how, what and when of then next phases.

After you decide that, then you can move on to the next phase which is provision, what you're planning to do. And this is where the home interior design software comes in handy. I told you earlier, the learning will pay off, well guess what, here is where it pays off. With this little visual image aid you can imagine what your redecorating plans will do to your rooms and make your life just that much more easier. And in the end that's really what you want isn't it, to make your life easier. So, stop putting it off with excuses. Learn the fundamentals of interior design and decorating, get yourself a good piece of interior design software and bring you home back to life.

Christmas in New York City - Art Galleries & Theatre

Christmas in New York City - Galleries & Theatre
This Christmas visit to New York I was fortunate to see the Musical, South Pacific at the Lincoln Center, and two Art Galleries; Georgia O'Keeffe at The Whitney Museum of Modern Art and Kandinsky at the Guggenheim Museum.  I love theatre in New York.  There is something very special about getting dressed up and the excitement of the opening strains from the Orchestra.  It was a toss up between the new play 'A Little Night Music', the latest revival of Stephen Sondheim's Tony Award-winning musical with Angela Lansbury and  Catherine Zeta-Jones, or the classic Rodgers and Hammerstein musical 'South Pacific' at the Lincoln Center.  I am happy to say that I saw South Pacific and it was as good as the concierge at my Hotel said it was.  There was something soothing about hearing songs that I have grown up with and are so familiar.  The theme song "Some Enchanted Evening," stayed with me for several days. Here is the YouTube version of 'Some Enchanted Evening' you can listen to.

The Guggenheim Museum had a wonderful exhibit of the work of the Russian artist, Vasily Kandinsky, who was a pioneer of Abstract Art and broke new ground in painting in the first decades of the twentieth century.  The Guggenheim designed by Frank Lloyd Wright was opened in 1959 and, rightly so, is claimed to be one of his most famous masterpieces. The spiraling design of the interior makes this museum one of the best venue's I have ever been in to view an art exhibit.  As you walk up the spiral ramps you can view the pieces of artwork as a whole.  Magnificent!!!

These are two of my favourite pieces by Kandinsky from the exhibit.  You can view the exhibit on line here.
After the exhibit we got directions to a local's favourite restaurant on E. 73rd Street and I had a most memorable lunch of Arugula salad topped with sliced roasted artichokes and topped off with large, (very large) paper fine slices of Parmigiano-Reggiano.  Yummm!!

The walk back to the Hotel was in typical New York style; down streets lined with beautiful townhouses all decorated for the holiday season, past apartments with uniformed concierges, amongst the locals walking their dogs, across streets backed up with bumper to bumper honking taxis, and a short jaunt through Central Park.
